Important Event #4

Forest is different 

  The fourth important event that I found in 'The Messenger' in chapter 12 was when Matty notices changes in Forest and how it seems more hostile towards him. In the text it says," But on this journey, something was different. For the first time, Matty felt hostility from forest. The fish were slow to come to his hook. A chipmunk, usually an amiable companion, chittered angrily and bit his finger when he held his hand toward it. Many red berries, of a kind he had always he had always eaten, had black spots on them and tasted bitter; and for the first time he noticed poison ivy growing across the path again and again, where it had never grown before. It was darker too." (Lowry, page 106) This makes you wonder if Forest is going to turn against Matty and try and attack him. What will Matty have to face on the return trip through Forest? This event also stood out to me and made me curious on what was going to happen next in the story. I also wondered if Forest would hurt Kira too, or would it leave them in peace.
