Mood

The mood of 'The Messenger', or the way I feel while reading the book, is a sort of sad feeling. The story makes me feel sad because of the events that take place and the way the characters have to deal with death and despair. It makes me feel sad and sorry for them. In the end of the book on page 168 the text says, "Drifting there, he looked down and saw his own self becoming motionless. He felt his breathing slow. He sighed, let go, and felt a sense of peace. He watched Kira wake, and he saw Leader find her there." (Lowry, page 168) This made me really sad at how much Matty sacrificed for everyone else's sake. He spent his own life to fix Village, and heal Forest and its decay. He brought a new light in his world and saved his friends. This also supports the theme 'people do anything for love, because Matty loved Kira and Leader and everyone. Matty sacrificed himself, the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone. Matty plays a huge part in the story and parts of the story such as theme, mood, tone, conflict, etc. This all shows why I believe the mood of this story is sad.
