The story 'The Messenger' by Lois Lowry takes place in Village, a society that respects everyone's flaws and disabilities. Everyone is given a title based on their talents, qualities, actions and interests. For example, Jonas is called the Leader because he is the founder of their society. Village is set up near Forest, the obstacle that separates Kira's village from Matty's village. Forest is another setting in 'The Messenger', a dangerous place that can kill the people that dare enter it. In Village, people are very kind to each other and are never selfish or rude. When Matty goes to the Trade Mart, he notices something, a change in Mentor's behavior when he makes a secretive trade. Something strange is happening in Village. Forest is giving warnings to people, and continuing to kill. Forest is thickening, times are changing, and Matty must get to Kira before Village is closed off...
