Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is where authors include details in the story that help you predict what will happen next. One of the best foreshadowing examples I found in 'The Messenger' by Lois Lowry is the part of the story when Matty starts to notice Forest changing. This is only the first part of the journey, and Forest is already starting to turn bad. You can start to assume that the trip back through Forest will not be nearly as easy as the trip going through it was. That is exactly what happened. On the trip back through the Forest to Village, the journey was much, much harder. It also required a sacrifice, which is what Matty was used as. He sacrificed himself and his powers to save everyone, even Forest. This is the best example of foreshadowing that I found in 'The Messenger'. Hopefully this will help you better understand what foreshadowing is.
