Point of View/ Perspective
The story 'The Messenger' by Lois Lowry is told in 3rd person point of view. This is where the narrator uses key words such as 'he', 'they', and 'them'. The narrator tells every character's feelings, thoughts, and actions. You could say the narrator is god-like with all the control they have over the story, being the one who tells it. Another way you can tell that a story is written from third person would be that they do not use the words 'I' or 'me' like narrators do in 1st person. They also would not use the word 'you' like narrators do in 2nd person, where the narrator is talking directly to the reader. Writing in 2nd person is not as common as 1st or 3rd. There are many more point of view types such as 1st person limited, or 3rd person omniscient. So, this story is not told from any character's point of view, but someone who is looking down at the scenario, and is able to read each character's thoughts and feelings. It would definitely change the story if the point of view changed. That is included in another page...
