Symbolism
Finding symbolism in 'The Messenger' was a bit hard because I am personally not that good at determining what things are symbols, but I will try my best. The first symbol that I found was trading. When the people traded things, it represented greed. Mentor was so greedy and desired love so much, that he traded away his personality and characteristics. Another symbol would be Frolic. Frolic is one of the puppies that Matty healed after he already knew about his powers. Frolic represents hope and happiness. When Forest was changing and beginning to show warnings, Frolic was scared, meaning that hope and happiness weren't completely gone, but there was not much of it. At the very end of the story, Frolic comes out of Forest, signifying that hope and happiness have returned to Village. These are a few examples of symbols in 'The Messenger', but there are many more.
